| Photograph 1920s Charabanc | |
An early 1920s original photograph of a charabanc day out, looking decidedly well laden! Everyone on board is in their Sunday best outfits. Note the spoked wheels up front and the larger solid rear discs. I cannot make out the town on the back (-isworth) and the registration is TC 2?27 on the rear of the coachwork
| |
| Photograph 1928 Buick | |
One of several photos I have of this late twenties Buick, so I think this was a well looked after example. It is RHD though has no registration on the front. I wonder if this is in South Africa?
| |
| Photograph 1928 Buick alongside steam train | |
Another photo of this '28 Buick. This old photo is a little faded but the subject matter more than makes up for it. Part of the Buicks registration is visible - ?5547? And an early steam train whistles past on the elevated railway tracks beyond
| |
| Photograph 1928 Buick with family | |
Here is the 1928 Buick that I have a number of photos of. It looks like it belonged to a large family, seen here protected from the sun under some form of canopy. Note how the spare wheel on the back has a cover slung over it, perhaps to protect it from the midday sun?
| |
| Photograph 1930s Cord | |
A great old photo taken in the USA of two kids (one on a tricycle) in front of dads streamlined Cord motorcar registration A 58875 - is this car still around somewhere??? Please let me know if it is!
| |
| Photograph 1930s cyclists | |
Ok not cars but I like this photo anyway of a large group of cyclists in the 1930s
| |
| Photograph 1930s MG sports car | |
This fabulous photo of a 1930s MG sportscar is actually of my great-uncles car, reg MG 5560 - is it still around?
| |
| Photograph 1930s Morris with owner | |
I have a number of photos of this guy over a good few years pictured with his very clean Morris saloon from the 1930s, complete with glistening AA badge and fog lamp. Is DLG 129 still around?
| |
| Photograph 1940s Caravan with model steam train | |
Great old photo/postcard showing a miniature steam engine, in the snow, alongside a touring caravan of the late 1940s in date
| |
| Photograph 2 cars in 1929 | |
Dated 1929 I'm not sure what either of these 2 cars are, though that furthest away with the radiator blind may be an Austin 7. The nearer car is less obvious but could be a Clyno
| |
| Photograph A couple in a 1930s sportscar at Blackpool | |
Here is a staged set for daytrippers and holidaymakers to Blackpool to pose in while they have their photo taken. This couple are posed in (or rather behind) a MG lookalike sports car of 1930s style complete with painted scenery behind. Quite why a car would be posed against a background suggesting it was stuck in the sea is not recorded.
| |
| Photograph Ceuta in Morocco 1933 | |
A fascinating large photograph that I found in a charity shop. The inscription on the back tells me that it is taken at the quayside in Ceuta from the deck of the S.S. Montcahn in May 1933. Ceuta is a Spanish enclave on the coast of Morocco I've read. There are many photos of old cars here alongside the ship, with many official looking gentlemen in evidence - the car in the foreground also has a flag attached to its radiator so must be for someone important!
| |
| Photograph Ford Model T pickups | |
I think this old photo shows a pair of early Ford pickup trucks, the lefthand one showing a sign for A W Abbott - perhaps a farm owner? I've a number of photos similar to this but none really identifies what or where this is? Note the spare tyre (only) in the rear of the LH truck
| |
| Photograph Ford Popular 103E | |
This old photograph shows a couple of friends outside their 1950s Ford Pop, which sports a few personalised touches such as painted white wheels, flashing side indicators, a roofrack and a pair of what look like Notek spotlamps up front. Perhaps the roofrack was used to transport this ladies elderly wheelchair?
| |
| Photograph Ford Zephyr Mk2 | |
A photo of a couple touring in Austria, September 1962. A Fiat 600 is parked behind
| |
| Photograph Guinness staff in a vintage car | |
Perhaps a works outing? Lots of cheery ladies in and around a vintage motorcar, several clutching oversize bottles of Guinness. A couple are also perched on an elderly cycle in the foreground. The car shows signs of use judging by the crazing on the front wing, although curiously it has no screen or frame of any kind, yet has a road fund license. I think it may have been one of the then-popular attractions at a beach resort whereby a car and/or bike is posed for couples and holidaymakes to pose in while their photo was being taken - any more suggestions? There is a painted scenery behind which makes me think this is the case.
| |
| Photograph Humber with Lallique style radiator mascot | |
A closeup view of the front of what I think is a 1920s Humber fitted with a beautiful if delicate looking radiator mascot in the shape of a sailing vessel or galleon - whatever the detail is just stunning and I bet it wasnt left on the car very often as even the rigging is detailed and must be very fragile! A 1920s AA badge is on the radiator below the mascot
| |
| Photograph London bus JXN 42 | |
I don't know much about old buses so can only suggest that it may be an AEC on Route 1 in London, calling in at Oxford Street, Charing Cross, Waterloo etc I guess in the 1950s. There is very little other traffic around so must have been photographed early in the morning or on a Sunday
| |
| Photograph Model T Ford | |
Two US farmers stood alongside a Model T Pickup truck
| |
| Photograph Model T Ford truck | |
A group of people pose alongside an opensided Model T of the 1920s
| |
| Photograph Old 1920s car alongside Lake Nakuru | |
Appears to be a photograph printed up as a postcard showing a mother and son alongside an open-sided 1920s car, complete with Shell 2 gallon fuel can on the running boards. The handwritten note on the back mentions 'hot snow' and 'deposits on the shores of Lake Nakuru' which a quick search tells me is in Kenya
| |
| Photograph Passengers get on a coach | |
Probably in the 1950s 3 people prepare to climb on board a coach for day out. The coach in front is operated by Blue Coaches, regn YJ 9291
| |
| Photograph PMT coach | |
Identifying old coaches and buses isnt something I'm good at but the PMT logo on the side of this old stager suggests to me that it was operated in the Potteries in the 1950s (note the more modern machine alongside). Registration is not clear but looks like MEM 437, with bus number S437 near the entrance. Note also the prominent advertising for Old Betty Plant's Quality Sweets! and the advertising boarding behind for Export Woodbine cigarettes
| |
| Photograph Shell Chemicals lorry in the river | |
One of my favourite photos! Can anyone tell me the story of this 1940s (?) lorry and how it came to end up nosedown in a River, probably the River Mersey which runs near to the Shell Stanlow refinery in England? I suspect someone forgot to apply the handbrake and only the spare wheel digging into the quayside stopped the lorry from going straight in! I'm sure Shell would have been very unimpressed if that load of Bulk Liquid Sulphur ended up in the drink!
| |
| Photograph Singer 9 Le Mans XJ 8926 | |
This Singer Le Mans belonged to my grandfather way back and we'd all like to know if it survives? At one time he also had a Singer Coupe which was sold in the late 1960s from the Cheadle Cheshire area - is that still around either?
| |
| Photograph Stoke on Trent Sewage Lorry | |
A great original old photo of a solid tyred lorry as owned by Stoke on Trent Sewage Department!
| |
| Photograph Veteran car AF 387 | |
Probably my oldest original photograph here, showing an early veteran car (perhaps a Humber?) registration AF 387
| |
| Photograph Wolseley outside a garage | |

| |
| Photograph WW1 Lorry with army officer | |
A rare old photograph of a serving Army officer with his solid tyred lorr, Army number 128696. I have no more details but if anyone can shed light on this lorry I'd be interested to hear from them
| |
| Postcard 1940s Cara-Cars Ltd classic caravan | |
Rare promotional postcard printed by Cara-Cars Ltd and showing their sumptuous caravan touring Europe. Interestingly the tow car is German registered
| |
| Postcard 1950s Bedford coach at the Devils Elbow | |
A great postcard showing and old Bedford coach ascending the Devils Elbow in Glenshee, Scotland - the highest public road in Britain (it says) where the steepest gradient is 1 in 3!!
| |
| Postcard 1950s Tram in Llandudno | |
A great old postcard from the late 1940s or early 1950s showing a tram with adverts for Catlin Follies Arcadia in Llandudno, North Wales. Alongside is an old V8 Ford saloon, reg CYF 836 complete with roofrack parked on the taxi stand. Behind is the Odeon cinema and a stylish motor coach operated by Royal Red.
| |
| Postcard Bank of England c1910 | |
An earlier view of the Bank of England and Royal Exchange in London. This postcard is franked 1913 so is a good early one. Lots of dapper men crossing the road with their hats on, a policeman stopping the traffic and early motorised buses mingling with horse-drawn carts. Lots of old adverts in evidence too, such as for Tatcho - Mr Geor. Sims Hair Grower (!), Maple, and Swan Vestas
| |
| Postcard Bank of England London | |
A nicely coloured postcard image of London in the 1930s (posted 1952). Lots of great old vehicles, cars, taxis and buses to look at here. Note at the bottom left the lorry with ACID written on the rear bodywork
| |
| Postcard Burford in Oxfordshire | |
This looks like a 1960s postcard to me of Burford - obvious cars include a 100E, Austin Cambridge, Mini, Austin 16, Minor, Morris J Type van, Citroen DS Safari, a 2 tone MG Magnette (Farina) and many more
| |

This is one of several in this series that I have, this one showing the earliest of Ferrari Grand Prix cars c1950 as driven by Ascari, Farina, Gonzales and our own Reg Parnell of Gt Britain
| |
| Postcard Heddon on the Wall | |
A 1950s postcard image of Heddon on the Wall with the Three Tuns Inn in the distance, with a Phase 1 Standard Vanguard, sidevalve Fords, a Standard 10, Mk7 Jaguar and others outside. Note the olde worlde petrol station on the left with its illuminated Esso petrol pumps and globes
| |
| Postcard Ivars Fish Bar in Seattle | |
This great image also features on sister site oldclassiccar but I like it so included it here too - I'm told this bar is still there though I bet the great old American cars aren't!
| |
| Postcard Llandulas Caravan Park North Wales in the 1950s | |
Lots of brightly (re)coloured classic caravans to feast our gaze on here, with an Austin A70 and Mk1 Ford Consul for bedfellows. The other old cars are mostly hidden though the rear of one reminds me of a Standard Vanguard perhaps. I think this view would have been from the 1950s
| |
| Postcard Middlegate in Penrith | |
Someone has ripped the stamp from this postcard but I'd guess it dates from the 1920s or 1930s. In the foreground is a nicely liveried Model T Ford van and elsewhere evidence of horsedrawn transport and even a motorcycle & sidecar combination
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No1 | |
Probably dating to the 1950s this cartoon postcard shows an indignant courting couple in the back of a taxi drivers cab
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No2 | |
Another 1950s cartoon postcard containing motoring humour, showing a Just Married couple and the fella getting a slap!
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No3 | |
An earlier motoring related cartoon postcard dating to the mid 1930s (franked 1935) showing a dashing young gent whisking his intended away for a quick cuddle in the countryside! The tone of this postcard is a lot less trashy than later examples
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No4 | |
Another very early cartoon postcard with a motoring theme, in this case a removals driver in the early 1930s (franked 1932) being asked if he can move this lady's immobile husband. Note the very early style of lorry cab complete with open sides
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No5 | |

Can you Do Anything About My Bumpers the buxom young lady asks the garage attendant, in this 1950s seaside postcard. I'm sure he can!
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No7 | |
Another happy example of pre-political correctness days! Although the feminists out there would probably approve of this stockinged young lady working on this guys old car!
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No8 | |
A nice colour postcard showing children on a fairground ride, advising that its much better than being at school! Note also the french translation printed on the card
| |
| Postcard Motoring Humour No9 | |
An early 1900s cartoon postcard showing a grumpy motorist with his veteran machine expired at the side of the road, or possibly at the side of the road after having flattened someone in a road accident (not very clear!)
| |
| Postcard Piccadilly Circus in London | |
A busy 1930s/40s image of central London. The stamp is franked 1949 but the image pre-dates this I think. There is a lot going on in this vintage photograph, 2 Fordson E83W vans are turning in the foreground (dating the card to late 30s) and a larger van is to the right still only wearing on blacked-out headlamp, perhaps harking back to recent wartime use? There are a few old Austin taxis in evidence and the old black & white crossing barriers in the centre of the road
| |
| Postcard Seaton in Devon | |
The Promenade at Seaton in the 1960s. Parked alongside the bright beach huts are a Minor, A35 Countryman, Ford Classic, Austin 1100, Mini, VW camper, A70 and many more mostly British cars
| |
| Postcard Southport - Lord Street | |
An early touched in postcard showing Southport in the 1920s - the stamp on the rear is actually franked 1943. In the foreground is a small van double parked alongside a row of parked saloon cars. In the distance a tram makes its way quietly along the tram tracks visible in this image
| |
| Postcard Southport - Lord Street | |
A slightly later image of Lord Street now without tram rails in the road. This postcard is franked 1952 and shows Southport in the late 1930s. An Austin 7 is travelling towards us with two slightly larger saloons on the left, registrations CFY 286 and JYL 782
| |

A 1970s colour postcard showing a traffic scene in Stoke on Trent. Parked at the lights outside Kelvin Shoes is a Driving School Mini, a Mk1 Cortina, Ford Corsair, a Mini Countryman woodie and various other old Fords and BMC cars behind
| |
| Postcard Waterford City in Ireland 1960s | |
A very late 1950s or early 1960s colour postcard of Waterford City, Ireland. Plenty to look at here, old coaches, a Ford 300E estate, a 100E saloon, Minor, two VW splitscreen campers, a Bedford J2 lorry, an E493A Prefect, A35, a Farina Cambridge to name a few. Judging by the group of coaches in the distance I suspect the large shed could in fact be a bus garage
| |

An image probably from the early 1970s showing Wyle Cop with many old cars in evidence, such as Austin 1100, Standard 10 reg DUX 190, Viva HB, Minis, Herald convertible, Fiat 850, BMC J2 van and Mk1 Escort van
